I pretended I heard nothing and turned my attention to Oswald.

“Have a seat here, okay? Now, what do you think happened to Vivienne?” I asked him as we settled around the table.

His eyes grew wide, and he shook his head. “I don’t know. It’s terrible. It wasn’t me, you know. I’d never…I mean, not Vivienne. I couldn’t. I wouldn’t…”

“We aren’t accusing you. Just trying to get answers. Did you see her again last night after everyone went to bed?”

“No. I was in my room. By myself. Not doing anything or talking to anyone.”

He looked from Connie to me and then back again. Tears were already poking at his eyes.

“Okay, okay. We believe you,” Connie said. “Why don’t you go get a drink and something to eat? Stay away from Lila, though,” she added quickly.

Oswald nodded and slunk from the room.

“Shortest interrogation ever,” I commented.

“Come on, it wasn’t him. He doesn’t have it in him. I mean, look at the kid,” Connie said as the door closed behind him.

I agreed. “He is strange, but seems so timid and unsure of himself. But you never know, you know?”

“Yeah, but I think in this case, we know! Let’s move on and find out what everyone else was doing last night when she died.”

The door flew open and Hannah poked her head in. “Oswald came out, so I figured you were ready for someone else?”

We invited her to have a seat, and without prompting, she immediately implicated herself.

“I hated her for being so mean about me simply calling home. It made a difference in how I could concentrate, you know, knowing my family was safe. Do you know how many home invasions there are? What if they’d been tied up and unable to answer? What if my husband was hit over the head with a bowling trophy and was sprawled on the floor, bleeding and my children were -,” she stopped to take a breath and we cut her off at this point.

“Hannah, I think your imagination is getting the better of you right now,” Connie said. I know she didn’t mean to be condescending, but that is how it came out and Hannah’s face changed. She narrowed her eyes and issued a not so veiled threat.

“Be careful. You don’t want to be next. This interview is over.”

And with that, the mild-mannered new mom stalked away.

“Did she just threaten me?” Connie was incredulous.

“Yeah, but I don’t think she meant it. Remember, no one is acting like who they really are. She was being the thriller writer. So, of course, no help at all. And we didn’t find out where she was last night either. This is going really well.”

Nina Porter was next. The science fiction writer had moved on from poisonous plants and was now considering aliens to be the culprits. Then she flipped again.

“But, you know, if it wasn’t aliens, I have access to all kinds of things in my lab at the high school. And if I’d wanted to poison her, I certainly could have.
